If your yard gets full sun, prefer PVC or a mineral-core composite. If you want maximum grain realism for the dollar, Trex Transcend or Fiberon Sanctuary are the picks. PVC is the long-hold winner; composite is the resale default.

Cost assumptions and sources

U.S. planning allowances in USD for a simple, single-level deck, including ordinary materials and contractor labor. These are PaperPlan editorial assumptions, not surveyed averages or a local quote.

Demolition, permits and engineering, taxes, stairs, railing, roofs, unusual foundations and difficult site access need separate quotes. Location, product selection and labor can put a real bid outside these ranges. Canadian projects need local CAD pricing.

Common questions

Which lasts longer, PVC or composite?

PVC. PVC boards typically carry 50-year warranties versus 25–30 for premium capped composite. In practice, both outlive pressure-treated pine by decades.

Is PVC decking hotter or cooler than composite?

Cooler. PVC has lower thermal mass and many lines use heat-mitigation technology. Mineral-core composites like Deckorators Voyage also run cool.

Why is PVC more expensive than composite?

PVC raw material is more expensive than wood flour, and the deepest cap layers are PVC-on-PVC. You’re paying for color hold, weight, and lifespan.
